+8:30 am
--- 9:00 am     “2500 Stories: The Making of a Placename Book”, Ren Vasiliev, State University of New York, Geneseo
“In writing a placenames book of New York State villages, towns, and cities, I have found that it is not one simple unified work, but one of many stories. I would like to discuss the data gathering that goes into this type of work, as well as the variety of names found in the state. New York is rich in Native American names that offer a description of the landscape. It is also steeped in some of the earliest Dutch and other European influences. And then there are the simple, purely American names that honor people famous nationally or local, or that describe the landscape as it was when the first settlers arrived, or that have nothing to do with anything except that they sound nice. I would also like to talk about the decision-making that goes into this kind of work: which and how many names to include, which to rely on, and which stories are true.”

9:00 am
--- 9:30am        “Development of a Toponymic Data Exchange Model in Canada”, Barbara MacIntosh, Canadian Board of Geographical Names
A contract submission to GeoConnections, entitled, “Toponymic Data Architecture Standard for CGDI” has been accepted and work is underway. The purpose of this contract is to define the common toponymic data architecture standard. This work will involve reviewing the current business model and creating a new logical data model, standard and exchange schema required for the efficient interchange of toponymic data and its spatial extents between agencies through the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CDGI). Implementation of this contract will include consultation with the partners (members of the Geographical Names Board of Canada) and the major clients of the Canadian Geographical Names Data Base (CGNDB).
